Finding the right Pilates instructor isn’t always easy—especially if you’re just getting started. You’re not just picking someone to guide your workout; you’re choosing someone you’ll trust with your body and your health. Here are a few essential things to consider before booking that first class:

What kind of certification does the instructor have?
Not all Pilates certifications are created equal. Some instructors may only be certified in Mat Pilates through a course that lasts a few hours or a couple of weekends. Others have undergone a comprehensive certification process through a reputable organization—one that includes a minimum of 500 hours over a year or more and covers all Pilates equipment (Reformer, Tower, Chair, Cadillac, and more). Always ask about the depth and scope of their training.

Has the instructor pursued continuing education?
If you have a specific injury or physical condition, it’s important that your instructor has received training in injury management and rehabilitation. A truly committed Pilates professional will stay up to date with continuing education and advanced training to support a wider range of needs.

Are group classes right for your body and age?
If you’re under 50 and injury-free, you can likely enjoy group classes safely. But for clients over 50 or those dealing with physical limitations, private sessions are often a better and safer choice. Personalized attention allows for appropriate modifications and more careful monitoring of alignment and form.

Does the studio maintain its equipment regularly?
Safety doesn’t end with the instructor—it also depends on the equipment. Unfortunately, many studios overlook routine maintenance. Equipment should be inspected and serviced regularly to ensure it’s in proper working order and safe to use. Don’t be afraid to ask how often the studio services its machines.

Should you choose an experienced instructor or someone new?
It depends on your personal needs. If you have injuries or specific conditions, a seasoned instructor might be essential. However, new instructors with a comprehensive certification can also be a great fit—especially if they work in a studio that offers mentorship and support from more experienced teachers.
